Phew. That’s lot of time in the gym, and in tights. Little wonder that Boston-born, Los Angeles-based Evans was looking for a change of pace from big-budget, big-box- office, CGI-heavy spectaculars. Tough luck, then, that in his quietly moving new film he was directed by another comic-book-adaptation veteran. And he plays another superhero: a single parent. In “Gifted”, Evans is Frank, a boat mechanic on the Florida coast who’s the guardian of seven-year-old Mary, played by Mckenna Grace. She’s his niece, the daughter of his late sister: Diane was a troubled math prodigy who committed suicide. Like her mother, Mary is an algebraic genius. But Frank is determined to give her as “ordinary” a childhood as possible, and protect her from a world that will deem her a prodigy – and quite possibly send her down the emotionally troubled route that ultimately killed his sister. Cue friction with the education authorities who want to fast-track Mary’s special skills. Cue legal battles with his distant, domineering mother who’s determined to take Mary away from him. And cue, yes, some heavy emotion that’s deftly handled. No one will judge you if you cry… Heroes, whether real or super, are comfortable with tears, right? Craig McLean: Mr Evans – “Gifted” is a lovely film, nicely paced and beautifully written. But while you’re good, that kid acts you off the screen… Chris Evans: Ha ha! Yeah, she’s great, isn’t she? Mckenna is something else. She’s very mature for her age; she certainly has a lot of experience on a film set but she’s still a kid. That’s the hardest thing when you’re casting a young person – they have to have the wild freedom of a child but at once know that this is still a job. And there are times when you have to be professional, but not so much that it’s ro- botic. And she really strikes that balance. C.ML.: Were you looking for a sharp change of pace, something as far away as possible from Captain America? C.E.: Not necessarily. I don’t think you go looking for the opposite of whatever you’ve been working on. I think you go for whatever your creative appetite is hungry for. So it can affected by a lot of different factors. But my agents sent me a whole bunch of scripts and this one just resonated. I just thought it was really interesting. C.ML.: You’re described early on in the movie as “the quiet, damaged, hot guy”. Does playing that come easy to you? C.E.: Ah, ha ha, I don’t know! That line wasn’t my call! C.ML.: Do films like this exercise different acting muscles from when you’re acting in the Marvel world? C.E.: I don’t know if it’s necessarily different acting muscles – but maybe different patience muscles. On a big film like “Captain America” the pace of things is a lot slower. You really have to accept the fact that there’s going to be a lot of down time throughout the day. And that can become a bit tedious at times. But films like “Gifted” move at a real quick clip; you’re probably shooting seven, eight, nine pages [of script] a day. So you really feel like you have to work. C.ML.: Your uncle is Democratic Congressman Mike Capuano, a staunch liberal, and your Twitter feed is full of political comment – much of it force- fully criticising the Trump presidency and its policies. Have you always been so engaged and outspoken? C.E.: Well, I think this administration is [stirring] a lot of feelings in me… that are new. I don’t think we’ve seen an administration like this before, and it takes some getting used to, I suppose. But I’ve al- ways had strong beliefs, and I’d like to believe I always fight for people who need it if the situation calls. Whether I were an actor or not, I think I would still be vocal and try to shine a light on places that I could. C.ML.: Did you grow up in politicised family? C.E.: Certainly an opinionated one. I don’t know how politicised it was. Well, my grandfather ran the Department of Revenue in Massachusetts, and my uncle was obviously a mayor and then a Congressman. So while I wouldn’t say it was an entirely political family, it was certainly one with strong moral views. C.ML.: You’re about to begin work on Avengers #3 and #4. What kind of preparation does that involve? C.E.: It’s pretty much just hitting the gym and trying to get some size back. I really don’t naturally walk around with the weight I have for these Captain America films. So, hitting the gym for an hour a day – and eating! And that’s nothing too fancy. It’s more about volume than content. C.ML.: “Gifted” director Marc Webb is a superhero alumnus as well (he helmed “The Amazing Spider-Man” and “The Amazing Spider-Man 2”). Did you guys talk about your shared experiences in the comic-book-to-big-screen world? C.E.: Not really, although we discussed a couple of times how those fans are rabid with their intellect and their hopes run very high. And if you’re the people tasked with bringing these things to life, there’s a lot of pressure involved in those films and just trying to get it right. If you do, those fans are really in your corner. And if you don’t, they can really be brutal. C.ML.: According to Wikipedia – so it must be true – “although raised Catholic, [Evans] has expressed pantheistic views and a great interest in the philosophies of Buddhism”. Is that a fair summation of your beliefs? C.E.: Ha! Obviously Wikipedia knows everything… and anything I say now is going to contribute to the future of Wikipedia’s endless amount of alternative facts chasing me around! But yeah, I do like Bud- dhism. It’s focusing on the stilling of your mind a little bit, to have a deeper connection… The brain is a pretty noisy place, and I think that noise makes us feel more separate than connected. And I think when my brain noise is quiet, I feel more present, I feel more connected and I feel more at peace. And I think that’s kind of the motivation behind Buddhism. C.ML.: Do you meditate? C.E.: Sure. Not every day. But close. It’s just about focusing on your breathing. There’s no rules, could be 60 seconds could be 60 minutes. But the result is a reminder of a different state. C.ML.: Let’s end with a question asked of your character by Mckenna’s character in “Gifted”: is there a God? C.E.: I’m glad you saved that for last! Because I have the answer! Yeah, sure there is. I don’t think you go looking for the opposite of whatever you’ve been working on. I think you go for whatever your creative appetite is hungry for. So it can affected by a lot of different factors. But my agents sent me a whole bunch of scripts and this one just resonated. I just thought it was really interesting. C.ML.: You’re described early on in the movie as “the quiet, damaged, hot guy”. Does playing that come easy to you? C.E.: Ah, ha ha, I don’t know! That line wasn’t my call! C.ML.: Do films like this exercise different acting muscles from when you’re acting in the Marvel world? C.E.: I don’t know if it’s necessarily different acting muscles – but maybe different patience muscles. On a big film like “Captain America” the pace of things is a lot slower. You really have to accept the fact that there’s going to be a lot of down time throughout the day. And that can become a bit tedious at times. But films like “Gifted” move at a real quick clip; you’re probably shooting seven, eight, nine pages [of script] a day. So you really feel like you have to work. C.ML.: Your uncle is Democratic Congressman Mike Capuano, a staunch liberal, and your Twitter feed is full of political comment – much of it force- fully criticising the Trump presidency and its policies. Have you always been so engaged and outspoken? C.E.: Well, I think this administration is [stirring] a lot of feelings in me… that are new. I don’t think we’ve seen an administration like this before, and it takes some getting used to, I suppose. But I’ve al- ways had strong beliefs, and I’d like to believe I always fight for people who need it if the situation calls. Whether I were an actor or not, I think I would still be vocal and try to shine a light on places that I could. C.ML.: Did you grow up in politicised family? C.E.: Certainly an opinionated one. I don’t know how politicised it was. Well, my grandfather ran the Department of Revenue in Massachusetts, and my uncle was obviously a mayor and then a Congressman. So while I wouldn’t say it was an entirely political family, it was certainly one with strong moral views. C.ML.: You’re about to begin work on Avengers #3 and #4. What kind of preparation does that involve? C.E.: It’s pretty much just hitting the gym and trying to get some size back. I really don’t naturally walk around with the weight I have for these Captain America films. So, hitting the gym for an hour a day – and eating! And that’s nothing too fancy. It’s more about volume than content. C.ML.: “Gifted” director Marc Webb is a superhero alumnus as well (he helmed “The Amazing Spider-Man” and “The Amazing Spider-Man 2”). Did you guys talk about your shared experiences in the comic-book-to-big-screen world? C.E.: Not really, although we discussed a couple of times how those fans are rabid with their intellect and their hopes run very high. And if you’re the people tasked with bringing these things to life, there’s a lot of pressure involved in those films and just trying to get it right. If you do, those fans are really in your corner. And if you don’t, they can really be brutal. C.ML.: According to Wikipedia – so it must be true – “although raised Catholic, [Evans] has expressed pantheistic views and a great interest in the philosophies of Buddhism”. Is that a fair summation of your beliefs? C.E.: Ha! Obviously Wikipedia knows everything… and anything I say now is going to contribute to the future of Wikipedia’s endless amount of alternative facts chasing me around! But yeah, I do like Bud- dhism. It’s focusing on the stilling of your mind a little bit, to have a deeper connection… The brain is a pretty noisy place, and I think that noise makes us feel more separate than connected. And I think when my brain noise is quiet, I feel more present, I feel more connected and I feel more at peace. And I think that’s kind of the motivation behind Buddhism. C.ML.: Do you meditate? C.E.: Sure. Not every day. But close. It’s just about focusing on your breathing. There’s no rules, could be 60 seconds could be 60 minutes. But the result is a reminder of a different state. C.ML.: Let’s end with a question asked of your character by Mckenna’s character in “Gifted”: is there a God? C.E.: I’m glad you saved that for last! Because I have the answer! Yeah, sure there is. But maybe not the way you think. Maybe not a man in the sky taking checks and balances. But yeah, there’s something.
